1. What is counselling?

Counselling is an opportunity for you to discuss your personal issues in a confidential environment with a trained accredited professional where you get assistance to increase your self-awareness and feel more emotionally healthy.

A counsellor is, compared to family and friends, a neutral person who can give you the time, space and support to explore and understand yourself on a range of personal and relationship issues that may concern you.

While counselling is not a magic wand it helps you develop a new perspective and understanding of yourself which enables you to lead a more positive and satisfying life. The strategies that you develop will assist you in the future when new challenges emerge. Everyone is unique and your needs and goals for counselling are discussed and clarified at the beginning of the counselling and as the counselling continues.

2. Is it confidential?

All counselling sessions are confidential. The records that are kept are locked and the records are only minimal. The exceptions to confidentiality are when there is a risk of harm or threat to life or when there is threat of harm to a minor or harm to a minor stated during a counselling session or if your records are subpoenaed by a court of law in Australia. I work within the Privacy Act Guidelines of the Privacy Act 1988 Amended 2000.

3. What is a Psychologist?

A psychologist undergoes a minimum of 4 years university study. David has undertaken 6 years of university study and holds a Master’s degree specialising in Counselling.

A psychologist is similar to a counsellor but has the advantage of being able to identify and treat mental disorders. Psychologists provide a range of non-drug psychological therapies for emotionally disturbing and stressful problems that enable you to developing insight, understanding, acceptance and healing.

4. What can I expect from my first counselling session?

The first thing you can expect is that David will attempt to make you comfortable and at ease. One of the first questions he will ask is “what led you to make this appointment?”

The first session is an opportunity for you to start telling your story and with David setting your goals for counselling. Also you will learn some new things and gain some new ideas so that when you leave you have some first steps to take towards living a more positive life.

5. How many counselling sessions will I need?

This depends on your unique situations and your needs. Everyone is different. The average number of sessions for David’s Clients is 7, and this ranges from 4 to 15.

6. What are the opening hours?

Appointments are available from 9am to 8pm Monday to Thursday, Friday 9am to 1pm, and 8am to 10am Saturday. We will do our best to accommodate your needs around work and other commitments, however booking in advance is essential.

7. Consultation duration

Appointments are 50 minutes, but you will need to allow 60 minutes for admin, such as payment and rebooking.

8. How much will it cost?

I offer very reasonable rates for counselling. Concessions apply for health care card holders and pensioners.

9. What type of therapies and counselling do you use?

Depending on your needs David you work with you using different styles of counselling and therapy.

David commonly uses Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Reality Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Gottman Method Couples Counselling. All of these approaches have been researched and are proven approaches.
